Calling all Domestic Divas!

This just in...
the Domestic Diva line by Riley Blake.
This is such a fun line and The Pine Needle is happy to have loads of it.

This line brings us right back to the 50's.  Check out the theme fabric.

Doesn't this want to make you iron?
And we have just the thing for you to iron... here's a brand new product
which will fuse all your old pieces of batting together
into a large piece that is usable for a new project.

Check out "Heat and Press Batting Together"
and fuse new life into your batting.

And after all that ironing,
this fabric just calls out for some homemade chocolate cupcakes.

That's all for this week.  Have fun ironing, cooking and quilting of course.

Can you say Field Trip...

"What would happen," we wondered, "if each of us made a piece that had a common element? A green line that danced from piece to piece, to suit the vision of each artist, yet spoke to the others in the room."

News Alert!Gee's Bend Housetop Pattern
Gee's Bend patterns ARE coming! First they were coming and then they weren't. But, Geri was determined, and now we are happy to report we will have them in the store soon.

The interest in using solid colored fabrics, from custom hand dyed to production dyed has increased in the quilting world. We strongly recommend that if you are using hand dyed fabrics, such as the Gee's Bend solids, that you use a product such as "Retayne," a color fixative for dyed cotton fabrics.

Book Review
The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt

The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt
This delightful book by Laurie Aaron Hird is causing quite a stir and we are happy to be a part of the excitement. Inspired by the 1922 The Farmer's Wife magazine contest, Laurie created a queen-sized sampler quilt with 111 traditional blocks. The book includes a bonus CD with 106 piecing templates.

As you read through the book, you'll learn fascinating things about "the changing American culture of the 1920s". In 1922, the editors of The Farmer's Wife, a popular women's magazine of the day, asked their readers the following question: "If you had a daughter of marriageable age, would you, in the light of your own experience, want her to marry a farmer?" As you move through the block samples, you'll read excerpts from the letters, which are heartwarming and heart-wrenching.

Sandi Ray has created a year long class based on this book. Our customers enthusiasm and the interest in this project is proving to be contagious: a year of fun and learning, as you move through the blocks, stories and history.

Sandi's Quilt Academy Sampler Quilt
A quilt sampler is made up of many different design blocks and if often used as a teaching tool for beginning quilters or for those quilters wanting to learn new techniques. The sample blocks can be related in some way as design, theme, or color, or be completely different pulled together with sashings, cornerstones and borders.
Pattern quilts
Did you know...

that before 1840 pieced quilts were not common. With the advent of cheaper factory made fabrics, ordinary women no longer had to spend hours spinning and weaving their own cloth and could invest more of their time with creative sewing. Although a few patterns were published in early America, it wasn't until the late 1800's that quilt patterns were readily available. Quilters found ways to share patterns by making up sample quilt blocks, physical replicas of other quilters' blocks. These quilt block patterns sometimes appear to have been quickly sewn together to give the quilter an idea of how the pattern went. Some were more carefully sewn.

Sets of pattern blocks have been found bundled together by string or sewn as if bound and some were later sewn together into what is now called "pattern quilts", because the blocks were initially patterns for future quilt blocks.
